Endress+Hauser supports South African training initiative

Solid training is the key to South Africa's economic development. Endress+Hauser therefore supports the training of South African specialists in industrial automation. The first graduates - nine students and lecturers - were now awarded their certificates by German Chancellor Ms Angela Merkel in Johannesburg. Suppliers, installers and users in the field of industrial automation joined forces to form the Automation Training Council, an initiative by the Profibus User Group of Southern Africa. Their intention is to train young automation specialists in the widely used industrial communications technology, Profibus. 24 attendees already completed the first introductory course in Industrial Data Communications in August, hosted by Endress+Hauser in Sandton, Johannesburg. "Within less than a year, we want to train at least 96 students nationwide", says Nico Marneweck, Training Manager for Endress+Hauser South Africa and Training Coordinator for the Automation Training Council.

Invensys implementing InFusion system for Petro Rabigh

Petro Rabigh has awarded a multi-million dollar contract to Invensys Process Systems to implement an InFusion-based plant information management system (PIMS) for its refining and petrochemical complex located in Rabigh, Saudi Arabia. The plant, which is a joint venture between Saudi Aramco and Sumitomo Chemical Company (Japan), will start operations in the third quarter of 2008. "This is a significant project for Invensys where the capabilities of the InFusion infrastructure, combined with best-in-class applications, will be cost effectively integrated to provide accurate, useful, contextualised information throughout the enterprise," said Nabil Kassem, Vice President and General Manager of Invensys Process Systems Middle East. "These systems provide our customers with the repeatability of information feedback, consistency of business process execution and visibility of information that enables faster and better decision-making. It reduces the noise in the information, permitting better understanding of the business and facilitating business process improvement."

Siemens’ production plant for large gears in Friedrichsfeld, Germany

Siemens Automation and Drives (A&D) has expanded assembly capacity for large gears at its Friedrichsfeld site. The first expansion stage, the new hall M of the A&D Mechanical Drives (MD) Division, was officially opened. Gears for marine drives and the cement industry, and extruder gears for the plastics industry will be manufactured here in future in an area covering approximately 6,900 square meters. Demand for large gears has risen sharply in recent years. As well as the European markets, there has been a constant rise in demand for extruder gears and gears for the cement industry primarily in the Arab states, the U.S. and Asia. To enable further enhancement of gear production, the Mechanical Drives (MD) Division of Siemens A&D is investing in new assembly capacity in Friedrichsfeld. "With the new capacity at Friedrichsfeld, we are optimizing and expanding our production of large gears and thus creating the best possible conditions for meeting the growing demand for large gears", says Manfred Egelwisse, Head of the MD Division.
