Installation and maintenance costs for RS485 cables are on the increase while wireless technology can cut the costs associated laying cablesand making mechanical connections. The Bluetop 100 radio modem employs Bluetooth wireless communication technology. It replaces RS 485 or RS232 serial cable connections over distances up to 1km in industrial environments. The modem allows reliable and secured data transmission;it employs frequency hopping spread spectrum (FHSS) digital radio communications at 2.45GHz. This offers both data security and signal immunity to electromagnetic disturbance. Transmission distance is adjustedaccording to the antenna used: 10m with the built-in antenna; 100m with the omni-directional antenna; and up to 1km with the directional antenna. The modem is operational with DIN rail mounting and a 230V mainssupply, while its power consumption is <2VA.
