Servomex Gas Analyser Helps Coffee Brewing

Servomex’s 574 portable gas analyser
The Servomex 574 portable gasanalyser is being used to ensure freshness of Senseo coffee pods.

The Senseo brewing system was developed jointly by coffee companyDouwe Egberts and electrical appliance manufacturer Philips. Senseo states that one of the benefits of its system is that it can brew 1or 2cups coffee within 1 minute.
Douwe Egberts is using a Servomex 574portable gas analyser for each packaging line. Roasted and ground coffee quickly loses its freshness if exposed to oxygen, so Douwe Egbertspackages the coffee pods in sealed foil bags using nitrogen. There are packaging lines for the different blends of coffee and each has itsown Servomex 574 portable oxygen analyser. Paramagnetic sensing technology analyses oxygen in roasted coffee applications. Roasting coffee produces a small amount of carbon monoxide that is absorbed by the coffee; this slowly out-gasses and can lead to false negative readings. Because the oxygen is consumed in this way, catalyst-based oxygen analysers tend to give a low or zero reading. The Servomex 574 operates at ambient temperatures, so there is no opportunity for oxygen to combinewith carbon monoxide.
Servomex says that because of this technology they can ensure that reliable readings are obtained. The system alsohas an analogue output that can automatically feed data to a system for storage and analysis if required.
